چکیده

The development of teleworking relies heavily on telecommunications infrastructure. In particular, fiber optic networks for high speed networking and various wireless standards (IEEE 802.1x) lead to extensions of fixed networks. Moreover, Private Branch Exchanges (PBXs) with the introduction of IP technology are being transformed to universal access platforms for corporations and organizations. In this paper, an overview of these emerging telecommunication technologies and their deployment in Greece is presented. Emphasis is given to the implementation plans for the island of Crete, like the Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) exploiting fiber optics and wireless communications, or the wireless hotspots for the tourism sector. These implementations’ implications on teleworking development in Crete, is examined along with other issues, such as regional development, prevention of out-migration from rural areas, and provision of telematic services.

Impacts of the Negative-exponential and the K-distribution modeled FSO turbulent links on the theoretical and simulated performance of the distributed diffusion networks

Merging the adaptive networks with the free space optical (FSO) communication technology is a very interesting field of research because by adding the benefits of this technology, the adaptive networks become more efficient, cheap and secure. This is due to the fact that FSO communication uses unregistered visible light bandwidth instead of the overused radio spectrum. However, in spite of all ...

QoS Provisioning Techniques for Future Fiber-Wireless (FiWi) Access Networks

A plethora of enabling optical and wireless access-metro network technologies have been emerging that can be used to build future-proof bimodal fiber-wireless (FiWi) networks. Hybrid FiWi networks aim at providing wired and wireless quad-play services over the same infrastructure simultaneously and hold great promise to mitigate the digital divide and change the way we live and work by replacin...

Backhaul-Aware Decoupled Uplink and Downlink User Association, Subcarrier Allocation, and Power Control in FiWi HetNets

Decoupling the uplink and downlink user association improves the throughput of heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and balances the traffic load of macro- and small- base stations. Recently, fiber-wireless HetNets (FiWi-HetNets) have been considered as viable solutions for access networks. To improve the accuracy of user association and resource allocation algorithms in FiWi-HetNets, the capacity ...

Performance of the Wavelet Transform-Neural Network Based Receiver for DPIM in Diffuse Indoor Optical Wireless Links in Presence of Artificial Light Interference

Artificial neural network (ANN) has application in communication engineering in diverse areas such as channel equalization, channel modeling, error control code because of its capability of nonlinear processing, adaptability, and parallel processing. On the other hand, wavelet transform (WT) with both the time and the frequency resolution provides the exact representation of signal in both doma...

Asymptotic Close to Optimal Resource Allocation in Centralized Multi-band Wireless Networks

This paper concerns sub-channel allocation in multi-user wireless networks with a view to increasing the network throughput. It is assumed there are some sub-channels to be equally divided among active links, such that the total sum rate increases, where it is assumed each link is subject to a maximum transmit power constraint. This problem is found to be a non-convex optimization problem and i...
